On October 13, 2025 The City Council of Hamilton Georgia voted to reject participation with The HCCRP in the construction of a memorial park on the land acquired for that purpose. Our final design plan from the landscape architect is shown below. It was delivered to the City Council on November 10. On December 30 the HCCRP sent a registered letter to the mayor requesting a written explanation of the reasons for this decision. They have until January 30 to respond.
The mayor has stated that the city intends to build a memorial park on that site in the future. On January 12 HCCRP members and supporters attended a City Council meeting. At that meeting the Council voted to form an advisory committee and to include members from our group. They also reviewed their progress toward the construction of a memorial park on the site provided by our organization. In the future we aim to inspire and educate the public about the Equal Justice Initiative and racial injustice, ensuring truth telling and healing regarding our difficult history.

Progress update on the Remembrance Park

As mentioned above The City Council of Hamilton Georgia held a meeting on October 13,2025 and voted to reject participation with The HCCRP in the construction of a memorial park on land that was acquired for that purpose and deeded to the City of Hamilton. This meeting occurred two days before the final landscape plan was delivered by the landscape architect and while the board leadership was out of town. The verbal reasons they gave were that they did not want a water feature and that the park was too expensive. The water feature was included in the council resolution by the previous mayor Ransom Farley and the cost of the park was going to be paid for by money raised by the HCCRP. Therefore The HCCRP has no choice other than to renegotiate and reform our participation in this project. We have offered the plan below to the city council and asked that they use some components for the park. We also urged them to form a citizens advisory committee to work with them which they did on January 12, 2026. The HCCRP intends to continue to function in the many events we have supported in Harris County in the past and to continue our association with the Eaqual Justice Initiative in Montgomery.
