Our Mission and Work

Mission
The Community Remembrance Project Harris County Georgia, in partnership with the City of Hamilton and the Equal Justice Initiative, is committed to promoting understanding, unity, and progress by erecting a historical marker and contemplative park in memory of people whose lives were taken in acts of racial terror in Harris County. The park will also include story boards depicting local history of the area. The goal of the project is not only to educate the public about local history, to include instances of racial injustice and violence, but also to own our truth, reconcile with our past, and move forward as a cohesive community.

Our Work
1. We are working to create a historical marker and contemplative park in Hamilton in memory of those who were lynched as a lasting monument to truth and reconciliation regarding this difficult history.

2. We co-sponsor a student essay writing contest in partnership with the Equal Justice Initiative.
3. We engage the community through various events to educate and inform about the purpose of the project and both historical and current results of racial injustice.

As a volunteer team of local and locally connected people and organizations these efforts are directed toward making Harris County a model of the way forward and a beacon HOPE for other communities with difficult pasts.
